PTA programs provide:
Opportunities for Helping Families Support Student Learning
The PTA hosts educational workshops, including math skills workshops for parents and seminars on various parenting topics.
Opportunities for Building Reading Skills and Enjoyment
PTA programs include: Reading is Fundamental, the Books and Beyond reading challenge, Everyone A Reader tutors for struggling readers, and two Scholastic Book Fairs. PTA also provides stipends for library staff and teachers to use in purchasing classroom enrichment materials.
Opportunities for Artistic Expression
The PTA funds art instruction by district-approved consultants. It sponsors the Reflections Program, an arts program in which students express themselves through visual arts, photography, literature, dance, video, and/or music composition. Another chance for students to showcase their talent is the student Opera and Variety Show in April. In May, our Benchley Bash picnic, choral review and art walk takes place.
Opportunities for Community Outreach
The PTA Community Service Committee participates in a Holiday Teddy Bear Drive and a Panda Quilt Project. The Panda Quilt Project involves students in creating quilts for local charities. The PTA also rewards individual student's acts of goodness at its Green Card Store.
Opportunities for Intercultural Communication
The PTA funds multi-cultural assemblies throughout the year and hosts a Multi-Cultural Fair to celebrate our ethnically diverse student body.
Opportunities for Connecting with Families and Building School Spirit
The PTA rings in the new school year with Back-to-School Night for families in September. Be sure to wear your BW t-shirt to this event. It hosts a fun-filled Halloween Happening in late October. Our Hospitality Committee welcomes parents and teachers back to school and celebrates their work throughout the school year. The PTA helps families connect throughout the year through a monthly newsletter called Paw Prints, a school-wide directory, monthly PTA meetings, an annual PTA membership drive to welcome new families, a kindergarten ,room parent, and volunteer orientation, and a bulletin board outside the front office with news of upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.
The PTA funds its work with a few key fundraisers. These include the gift wrap sale in September, book fairs, cereal box tops, E-script, cartridge recycling, and membership dues. By becoming a member of PTA, you help support our programs.
PTA meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month. Check your child's backpack on a regular basis for flyers about meeting times and other PTA events. You do not need to be a PTA member to attend meetings, although you must be a member to vote. There are lots of opportunities to join committees or volunteer at events.
